While a half a million dollars may get you a lot of things, a desk that belonged to (and if reports are true then designed by) Herr Hitler himself, may not be something that you would have thought of. Nevertheless, the brass desk set that is inscribed with his initials AH has just sold for $423,000.
The desk is a ceremonial one and is supposed to have been used for signing the famous Munich Pact. The desk is featured in news photos showing Hitler, Italian prime minister Benito Mussolini, Britain’s prime minister Neville Chamberlain, and France’s premier Edouard Daladier gathered at a desk featuring the brass pieces during the signing of the pact on September 30, 1938. The brass pieces are ink wells and the Nazi crest of an eagle and swastika.
The desk was originally expected to sell for half a million dollars (at least) and did not meet the reserve price. The desk was later sold at a seperate deal reached with the highest bidder after it failed to sell at a live auction.
