This 50 year old whisky which was casked in 1961 has finally been bottled and is available for release to the world. In order to have a bottle in your collection, make sure that your pockets are filled with the required ¥1 million ($12,970) [a far cry from the $200,000 Tribute of Honor or even the 30,000 GBP whisky birthday bottle but impressive nevertheless)
The specialty of the Yamazaki 50 years by Suntory is that it was casked in mizunara – an especially fragrant variety of Japanese oak which unfortunately is not the best material for a container due to its notoriously leaky nature. Nevertheless, it gives an aroma which make the losses worthwhile and the high price tag absolutely acceptable.
Only about 150 bottles are being released at this time (there have been similar limited releases before – each of which were sold out in a matter of hours). Pre-orders are now being accepted by major retailers in Japan. The Yamazaki 50 Year Old Whisky from Suntory is to be released on December 13th, but we expect it to be sold out long before the release date.
