Can you believe, Australia’s homegrown Qantas Airlines turns 100 next year. To celebrate this moment of pride, the Royal Australian Mint have come up with a special edition $1 coin. The coin is engraved with a Boeing Dreamliner, the newest addition to Qantas’ fleet of airlines.
A minister from the Royal Australian Mint, Michael Sukkar, said, “From humble beginnings in outback Queensland, the flying kangaroo is an integral part of Australia’s renowned aviation industry. These aeronautically inspired coins will enable Australians to participate in the historic centenary of Qantas and celebrate how far our aviation industry has come.”
As part of the centenary celebrations for the Flying Kangaroo, the Mint is also releasing a collection of 2020 $1 uncirculated coins. There will be 11 coins as part of the collection. Each coloured coin consists of an aircraft or important story relating to Qantas. The pink copper coin pays homage to the Australian kangaroo Penny, who was the inspiration for the logo.
Qantas and Royal Mint also have a ‘golden ticket’ plan for lucky winners. Ten golden tickets will be hidden in the Qantas Centenary 11 Piece Coin Collection Set for orders made until 20 December 2019. These lucky winners will be rewarded 100,000 Qantas Frequent Flyer prizes, which is a prize that no one can refuse. To try your luck at winning a golden ticket, visit their website.
