Altadis celebrates two milestones this year. 2019 marks the 175th anniversary of the H. Upmann brand, as well as the 50th year of Altadis U.S.A.’s association with Tabacalera de Garcia, one of the world’s largest premium cigar factories and home of the Grupo de Maestros team of master blenders.
Altadis U.S.A. is planning a full slate of celebrations and brand releases to mark this year’s anniversaries. One of the latest releases is the limited-edition Churchill covered in a medio tiempo wrapper grown in Nicaragua by cigarmaker A.J. Fernandez.
Medio tiempo is a precious bud of tobacco leaves that sometimes grow in small clusters on the topmost of the plant. These leaves are recognised for their uniqueness and intensity.
The limited edition is made by Fernandez at his factory in Nicaragua and contains only Nicaraguan tobacco grown on his farms.
“Working with Abdel [A.J.] Fernandez in the development of the H. Upmann 175 Anniversary has been a unique learning experience,” says Raphael Nodal, head of product capability for Altadis’ parent company Tabacalera USA.
According to Altadis, the medio tiempo wrapper was fermented within layers of broadleaf tobacco. During this layered process of alternating tobacco types, only the broadleaf was exposed to humidity resulting in a slower rate of fermentation. The entire process maximizes the characteristics of the medio tiempo. After the completion of the fermentation process, the broadleaf used was discarded.
“It took a lot of time to find the right tobaccos to blend with the unique medio tiempo,” Nodal adds.
The anniversary special limited edition Churchill measures 7 inches by 50 ring gauge and will retail for $18 each cigar. Only 14,750 boxes of 10 are being produced.
In addition to the 10-count boxes, Altadis is also releasing 50 humidors that will retail for $1,250. Each humidor will contain 50 Churchills, for a total production run of 150,000 cigars.
Both packaging styles will be launched at the IPCPR tradeshow 2019, the most important event of the year for tobacconists. The National trade fair is open to visitors from 28 June to 2 July 2019 at Las Vegas, USA. The newest introduction of Altadis will hit the market soon after.
