Art is sublime, surprising, overwhelming, and sometimes it’s just plain weird. Earlier this month, at the annual Art Basil Miami Beach Week, it was a very peculiar art that stole the show. A banana duct taped to a wall, titled ‘Comedian’, by artist Maurizio Cattelan was sold for $120,000. Last we heard, two editions of this art had been sold, and the artist was negotiating a third sale for $150,000.
These happenings have undoubtedly left everyone around the globe baffled. The people on the internet were quick to jump in with their jokes. And Savannah Bananas, a local baseball team were not far behind. On their Twitter page, they shared a picture of a T-shirt with their banana logo, with a duct tape across it and a caption that said, “Limited Edition Bananas Shirt. One of One. Only $120,000.”
Fans and followers loved this joke, with many claiming it was the funniest thing on the internet all week. Another joked about starting a GoFundMe page so he could buy the T-shirt. Even though we may not truly understand the relevance of the banana duct-taped to the wall, it certainly has brought out the comedian in a lot of us.
If you’re wondering what happened to the poor banana that was part of the actual art installation, it was eaten. Artist David Datuna posted a video of himself eating the art installation. The caption said: “Hungry Artist” Art performance by me. I love Maurizio Cattelan artwork and I really love this installation. It’s very delicious
