‘Cats’ never had it so good. I know that the felines are popular but 30,000$ for sketches of cats from a famous artist are just a bit too much to digest. 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy is one of the most desirable artist books from the 1950s. All that it contains are eighteen hand colored offset lithographs (one laid-on to cover) by Warhol. The book was printed as a Christmas gift idea by Seymour Berlin for Warhol.
Only 150-190 copies were ever produced (the exact figure has been lost in history). Precious few copies were sold since most of them were given away as gifts. The current copy (#110) which is on the auction block is a rare exception.
The hand coloring of the lithographs was done at ‘coloring parties’ with Warhol’s friends which resulted in forming the ‘collective approach’ which was so important through out the later career of the artist.
The calligraphy done by Julia Warhol (his mother) have some errors which were left uncorrected by the artist who appreciated imperfections.
Another amusing point is that despite the name of the book, there are only eighteen cats – the same as were originally published. Whether the other Sams ran off in search of prey or were never completed prior to publication, one has no clue.
