The Royal Australian Mint is releasing a new coloured 50 cent coin to celebrate one of the nation’s most iconic railway journeys.
The Afghan Express steam train, now fondly known as the Ghan, has cemented itself as a “luxury tourist experience” since it first ventured from Adelaide to Alice Springs, then Stuart, in 1929.
After almost a century in operation and the extension of the route to allow off-train visits to Coober Pedy and Katherine, the mint is paying tribute to the 2,979km rail adventure.
“The Ghan is a national icon and celebrating 90 years of adventure across the country is a significant achievement,” said Journey Beyond Rail Expeditions Managing Director Steve Kernaghan.
A coloured 50 cent piece depicting the red steam train has been released but will not go into circulation. A total of just 30,000 units have been made.
Coloured red, the coins are marked with an image depicting the iconic Australian train.
Royal Australian Mint CEO, Ross MacDiarmid said the new coin celebrates one of Australia’s most famous railway journeys.
“This striking limited edition coin tells the story of one of the world’s great railway journeys and the Royal Australian Mint is excited to share yet another new coin with train lovers, coin collectors, fans of The Ghan and the Australian public,” Mr MacDiarmid said.
If you want to get your hands on the mint condition currency you’ll need to buy it directly from the mint, which will also give you the opportunity to enter a competition to win a one-way trip on the Ghan.
People who buy the coin can enter the competition to win simply by sharing a photo featuring their new 50c Ghan coin depicting where their journey will begin. Winners will be announced on 6 September 2019.
Complete instructions on how to enter and conditions of entry are available here.
The 90th Anniversary of The Ghan coin can be bought for $15 and are Australian legal tender.
