Resorts are no strangers to spending big solely to attract customers. Klein Matterhorn is one such resort in the Swiss Alps and has dropped 60 mil for sweet Swarovski-encrusted gondolas.
What is this?
This is the world’s highest tri-cable gondola lift. It operates from Europe’s highest mountain station and offers a view of the steep slopes of one of Europe’s tallest peaks, the Matterhorn.
Who in their right mind made this?
This luxe gondola is a product of a collaboration between Leitner Ropeways, Pininfarina, and Swarovski. One is an Italian ski lift manufacturer. The others are a legendary car design house and a crystal giant respectively.
Needless to say, this ambitious project has turned out to be one of the most rewarding endeavors ever. These gondolas have been outfitted with a special bottom that turn transparent when you reach 560 feet. It offers a mesmerizing view of the glacier wrapping around the Swiss Alps below. Meanwhile, the leather and faux suede seats will keep you warm and rich during the climb.
Was it super easy?
The 60 mil wasn’t exclusively spent on this Swiss Alps traversing bling ride. The ambitious engineering feats include cable spans of 1.6 miles between towers. The relentless wind, fog and other weather related constraints also made things hard. Being the highest construction site on the continent did not help matters either.
Was it worth the effort?
All of this was worth it though as Zermatt’s glacier paradise is out of the climate change danger zone. This results in them having ideal conditions for their business all year round. When other major ski resorts plan from scratch for summer, Klein Matterhorn enjoys a nice stream of tourists.
Perhaps, this is why they can get away by charging only 10 bucks a ride. The sheer volume of people using this is enough to recover the costs at a steady pace. The group that have been most attracted by this endeavor are the millennials. 10 bucks a pop for luxe insta selfies in the Swiss Alps surrounded by mesmerizing landscapes is a pretty sweet deal all things considered.
Practicality? What’s that?!
And if all this was not enough, turns out this is a practical ride as well. Since it’s launch it has reduced the wait times quite a bit owing to its three times bigger capacity. What used to be a frustrating wait in frozen line has now turned out be one of the most sought out experiences now.
