Bugatti just unveiled the most expensive car in the world. The car was created by Bugatti as an ode to their continued existence in the automobile world. The company has created several masterpieces over the decade but this time they have outdone themselves.
Imagine that it’s your birthday. All your friends and family have come to honor your 110 year old existence. Each and every one of them has brought cool gifts for you. They are all praising you for your skills and how you have never failed to impress. Still, something feels missing.
That’s why you start creating something immaculate that can serve as a testament to your century-old existence. Through long days and even longer nights you finally create something beautiful. When you finally present it to the world, a buyer comes along and agrees to pay the most anyone had ever paid. Such is the story of the most expensive car in the world.
Tell me more!
The La Voiture Noire or The Black Car by Bugatti is a piece of art. The legendary Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic was the inspiration for the most expensive car in the world. The Atlantic was designed by Jean Bugatti. At that time, the car manufacturers rarely designed the car by themselves. Jean Bugatti changed that by designing revolutionary cars for his father’s company.
Only four Atlantic were made and only three have survived till now. One of them met an unknown fate during WW2. The remainder are now some of the most valuable cars in the world. Hence, it is no surprise that the most expensive car in the world is a limited edition as well.
How many will be there you ask? Well, only one La Voiture Noire will ever exist and that too has already been sold to an anonymous buyer. The buyer paid a cool $19 million to take it home. When asked, even Bugatti has refused to disclose the identity of the owner of the most expensive car in the world.
But… what about the 250 GTO???
I knew you would bring it up! Fret not. While it’s true that the former Tour de France winner went up for $70 million. That price was nowhere near what it was originally launched for. What made the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO different is the nostalgia that is associated with it. While it is still the most expensive car in the world all things considered, the Bugatti is a different beast altogether.
The Bugatti is the only new car to command such a ridiculous price at launch. Plus, not everyone goes around shopping for vintages. That’s why for most intents and purposes the La Voiture Noire is the most expensive car in the world.
What to expect?
The most expensive car is not just for show though. It packs quite a punch as well. Like its siblings Chiron and Divo this too comes with the iconic W16 8-liter 16-cylinder engine. This too develops 1,479 horsepower and 1,180 pounds-feet of torque, just like the Divo.
However, there’s a key difference between these cars. Unlike them the most expensive car in the world isn’t meant to just be fast. It is a luxury coupe that happens to have contain awesome power within it. Hence, until the owner brings it to your local drag-strip don’t expect much.
