The French Mint, La Monnaie de Paris had plans to issue a 1000 Euro gold coin this summer. While they will still be releasing the coin as planned ; what was not expected was the stunning response to their announcement. Hundreds of collectors queued up outside the mint to order the coin in person. Not surprising since only 10,000 such coins will ever be minted.
While the coins would be legal tender, it is hardly expected that any of these collectors would be using them as such. The coins are already being re-sold for €1200 online.
The 1000 euro coin is the most expensive one being created by this mint. Also being minted are a 100 euro coin in silver (50,000 pieces only). Both these coins feature Hercules – The Greek Hero along with two female figures symbolising equality and liberty.
