The story as it goes about this self portrait by Andy Warhol is an interesting one. Andy had wanted to paint Detroit art collector Florence Baron – but she instead asked him to create a self portrait for which she paid $1600 over five installments. Clearly, the lady had an excellent eye for art because 50 years later ; this self portrait is expected to be snapped up for $30 million ($20 million if you go by the lower estimate by the art market is not exactly in a down turn).
The four panel acrylic piece was created in 1963 and was passed on from Florence to her son and his wife – collectors who decided to hold on to the portrait just yet. The current owners are now Guy and Nora Barron – descendants of Florence who have decided to sell the piece to better the lifestyles of the family and of course donate some of the proceeds to philanthropies.
