When the first edition hardback copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was seen at the auction in Leyburn, UK, people knew this would be expensive. After all, it is one of the 500 first edition books that has survived till this day. Initial estimates pinned the value of the book around $27k – $41k. However, it sold for more than twice the estimate and is among the most expensive first edition Harry Potter books sold.
But, this is not the most expensive Harry Potter book ever. That crown is held by an annotated first edition copy of the book at $228,000. This copy included more than 20 original notes and drawings.
Other things sold in this auction included numerous maps, books, and manuscripts, and the whole auction brought in around $357k.
