Nelson Mandela. One man, many names, multiple roles and often said to be the Gandhi of our times. The beloved late President of South Africa is noted for many things not least of which is his philanthropy. It is very fitting then that castings of his hands made by Harmony Gold (a South African firm) have sold for $10.4 million USD. The details on the hand castings are amazing right down to the scar that he sustained during his 27 years in imprisonment. Even the fingerprints have come through in exquisite detail.
The castings include two in fist form , one with 1964 inscribed which is the year when he was first put in prison and the other inscribed with 1990, being , you guessed it, the year when he was released. Each piece is autographed by the late leader as well. Made from solid gold , a single buyer has now purchased all four castings bringing them together again after they were created back in 2002. The castings were originally sold to raise funds for a cause that was close to Mandela’s heart – the Nelson Mandela Childrens Fund.
