McLaren has just added another car to their prized longtail series – The 765LT Spider. The longtail series is McLaren’s premier series of cars with a focus on aerodynamics, performance, and engagement.
When the coupe version of the 765LT was launched last year, it immediately grabbed everyone’s attention and received a ton of glowing reviews. That led to it being sold out immediately. Not wanting to lose that momentum, McLaren has now launched this new roadster version and the car is shaping up to be a lot more fun than its predecessor.
Specs and Performance:
The 765LT Spider has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged 755bhp V8 engine and produces 800Nm of torque. This is the same engine that powered the coupe version last year which garnered a lot of praise. The differences start with the weight, with this version being 49kg heavier than the coupe at 1,388kg.
However, this increase in weight does not equate to a compromise as this car is the quickest LT Spider to date. The car takes a mere 2.8 seconds to go from 0-62mph and it takes an additional 4.4seconds for it to zoom past 124mph. McLaren states that the car is capable of sustaining a speed of 205mph given ideal conditions.
The on-track performance claims for this car as impressive too. It produces 25% more downforce than the previous Spider and comes with optimized gear ratios which make gear changes faster by 15%. The exhaust too is made out of titanium to make it 40% lighter than its stainless steel counterparts to ensure no performance is left on the table.
The electrically retractable roof is made out of a single piece of carbon fiber and requires no additional bracing to allow this functionality. The carbon-fiber supports for the roof are completely bonded into the MonoCage II-S structure for added rollover protection.
We also get the option to open the rear window of the car to let the melodious exhaust sounds in when the roof is on. The roof is capable of opening and closing in 11 seconds due to a complex and clever arrangement of 8 motors. This arrangement also allows one to operate this mechanism even at speeds around 32mph.
The car comes standard with an eight-inch infotainment screen and no audio system. While this may seem a bit bizarre, this too was done to reduce the overall weight of this car. No need to be sad though! McLaren does offer you an option to fit a four-speaker system with smart features at no extra cost. A more premium Bowers & Wilkins system is also available as a step-up.
McLaren offers eight color themes for this car. Each theme offers a unique blend of Alcantara fabric colors and contrasting stitching. An option to surround the digital dash and infotainment system with carbon fiber is also available.
But, that’s not all! The company also offers a pair of optional packs for the car for further customization. The first option – the MSO Clubsport Pack focuses on further weight reduction. It does so by swapping out the normal seats with carbon fiber ones. It also upgrades the existing brakes with ones from the McLaren Senna.
The second option is the MSO LT Black Pack which puts a glossy black finish on the tonneau cover, front splitter, rear bumper, air intakes, and mirror casings.
Pricing and Availability:
The 765LT Spider is going to cost $432,000. And, as indicated in the name, only 765 of these will be ever made. The first lot of which has already been sold out before the announcement!
