Range Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) group announced the Range Rover Astronaut Edition. The only customers who can buy the Astronaut Edition are people who reserved a space flight with Virgin Galactic – the first commercial flight to space.
Land Rover is aware that if you can sign up to fly into space, you definitely have enough money to buy a Range Rover. And that’s the reason the company launched a special edition to commemorate the first commercial flight to space.
The first batch of 600 people have booked tickets for $250,000 for the 90-minute experience on the space flight and are called “Future Astronauts”
Land Rover and Virgin Galactic had announced a global partnership in 2014. In addition to the marketing opportunities of this alliance, the two companies hoped the partnership would “inspire young people across the globe to pursue careers in engineering, science, and technology,” according to a joint statement released at the time. Virgin CEO Richard Branson hopes the partnership will inspire a generation.
Land Rover reportedly delivers Range Rover Astronaut Editions with either the company’s 398-horsepower p400e plug-in hybrid engine or its 518-horsepower 5.5 litre P525 supercharged V8 gasoline motor.
What looks as a regular Range Rover is actually a bit special. It’s been finished in a bespoke zero gravity blue paint and the British carmaker says it has taken inspiration from the depth and intensity of the night sky. If the paint job won’t articulate its exclusivity, the Astronaut badging on the tailgate will surely do. There are badges in the doorjambs also and the puddle lamps project Virgin Galactic logo. Virgin’s DNA of flight graphic will appear in several places in the vehicle, including the console lid, rear armrest, and door handles.
The most exclusive of the special edition’s design elements are the discs in the front seat cup holders. Before Future Astronauts take their flights, those who purchase Range Rover Astronaut Editions will have discs made from the wooden landing skid from 2018’s flight of the Virgin Spaceship Unity. After they complete their $2,777-per-minute trips, the passengers status converts to “Astronaut,” and they will receive replacement discs for their cup holders made from the landing skid on which their flight landed. Isn’t this interesting?
Land Rover hasn’t released prices for Range Rover Astronaut Edition. It is anticipated that the price will not be higher than their “Autobiography” edition which costs $135,000. So, the eligible customers can relax as the vehicle will likely to cost any day less than their legendary ride to space.
