Rare Chinese coins are suddenly in vogue as the country awakens to the value of owning art and cultural items. As Chinese millionaires scout the world for investments, they are also looking at getting back treasures of their homeland that till now fetched high prices in the west. With their new found wealth , the Chinese millionaires and billionaires are easily making their presence felt in this niche market. Seen here are some of the coins whose values have nearly doubled since 2010. The 1928 Chinese ‘Auto Dollar’ is an excellent example of such a rare coin.
This 1928 Chinese ‘Auto Dollar’ realized $74,750 at the Heritage April 2011 CICF World and Ancient Coins Auction. This is a superb example of the ever-popular Dollar, struck to commemorate the first road in the Province and said to feature the Governor’s automobile on the obverse. The details on this coin are impeccably sharp and the surfaces are a perfect blend of soft silvery patina and full mint luster.
Also seen during the auction at the World Ancient Coins Auction was a a 1914 Chinese Republic Dollar which despite being relatively common managed to bring in $51,750.
