A restaurant that is one of the first ones when any Michelin Guide of 3 star restaurants is drawn up with a chef that has been honored by the Japanese government as a ‘living treasure of Japan’ ; the Sukiyabashi Jiro is the very pinnacle of luxurious food while in Japan.
The Sukiyabashi Jiro unabashedly wins the title of the best sushi in the world (unofficial one ; but one that is given by fans rather then experts). The chef, Jiro Ono is over 85 years old but his fans ensure that reservations to this twelve seater eatery are booked out a year in advance.
Located in the basement of a Tokyo office building , the Jiro is typically Japanese. It under-promises and over-delivers. The goal of the chef is simple – everything needs to be perfect. A sushi set consisting of ten to twelve pieces made by Jiro would easily cost $300 , but money is not the requirement here , you would be hard pressed for reservations no matter who you are.
The Jiro has no menu, it all depends on the freshest catch of the day. That is the only way that the chef will have it.
So popular is the Sukiyabashi Jiro, that it has even inspired a film maker to create a documentary around the chef and his restaurant. Known as Jiro dreams of Sushi ; its a must watch for any perfectionist (in any field) and a treat for sushi lovers.
So for those of you who believe that luxury is something material and which only money can buy ; these two attributes certainly dont hurt. However, a luxurious experience from a Master can easily beat a diamond encrusted gadget ten times the price.
