John Dolmayan, owner of Torpedo Comics, has paid US $317,200 in an Internet auction for a copy of the first edition of Action Comics, the comic book from June of 1938 which is famous for having in its pages the debut of the “Man of Steel”. Isn’t that a bit too much? But I think only a comic lover can know its real worth and guess what, its estimated price was $500,000.
It is one of the highest prices ever paid for a comic book, probably a testament to the volume’s rarity and excellent condition. The cover features Superman lifting a car and smashing it against a rock, written and conceived by Jerome Siegel and Joe Shusteron. Dolmayan after getting the book said, “It’s considered the Holy Grail of comic books”. Well the interesting part is the previous owner had purchased it in a secondhand store in the early 1950s when he was 9 years old. He paid 35 cents.
