We have come across many luxurious timepieces and tourbillons embedded in iPhones before. However, the world’s largest tourbillon is something we didn’t know about. Yet. Kerbefanz, the creator of the Maximus MADE huge waves two years ago when they proclaimed that The Maximus had the world’s largest tourbillon in a wristwatch. However, they weren’t quite satiated with that yet. Which is why, this year, they have announced the Maximus Royal Tourbillon. This luxe monster comes with a 27-mm diameter titanium cage. But that’s not all! The tourbillon cage itself sits inside an even more fancier case that is now adorned with 463 baguette cut diamonds.
How did they do it?
Creating something of this caliber required throwing out previous conceptions of what a movement should be and recreating everything from scratch. That’s exactly what the company did. First of all, they decided to go with titanium as one of the building materials for the tourbillon cage. This was done in order to ensure that the rotation gets completed despite its humongous size.
The tourbillon makes one complete rotation every six minutes. It was designed completely in-house by the company’s own R&D team. The movement consists of 415 total components out of which 73 of those make up the tourbillon itself. The production of the tourbillon was only made possible due to the development of a unique balance spring, a rack assembly with a fine tuning screw, and a balance wheel.
What about the movement?
The movement is called the Caliber KRB-08. It has a straight-line lever escapement. It gets its energy from four parallel barrels that are built around a central wheel mounted on a ball bearing. It provides the torque required to power the massive tourbillon. 2.5 Hz is the best frequency of the timepiece which is equal to 18,000 vibrations per hour. The power reserve in this watch offers 54 hours of running autonomy.
Does it look good ?
The watch has an unconventional appearance. However, the way the time is read is surprisingly old fashioned. The hour and minute hands extend off of the tourbillon cage and are mounted on geared discs. The diamond encrusted indexes also give a nice character to the watch.
What’s the cost ?
Since the watch will only be made on order basis, the price is also available only by request. However, if you do plan on getting this watch, be prepared to have the jealousy of your colleagues.
