Marriage. The most wonderful thing in the world. Depending on who you ask. Affairs related to marriage can be quite perplexing. People spend years planning for their marriage. Though love marriages can be a quick affair; an arranged marriage can take significantly more time. Families have to meet, terms have to be set, and the people marrying need to know each other.
In many Asian countries arranged marriages are still quite predominant. Fathers save up for decades to marry off their daughters and even those with sons need to save up a good amount. Many parents devote their entire lives for their children’s marriage. Needless to say, arrange marriages are often relatively lavish and end up costing way more.
The problem does not end here though.
After all that, the parents still need to choose a suitable spouse for their children. Well, suitable at least according to them. While in some cases it’s an easy task, more often than not it can take months or even years to find someone suitable. Even then, an arranged marriage does not guarantee that the couple will be happy or even together forever.
But that still does not discourage some enthusiastic fathers. Case and point, Mr. Arnon Rodthong. This man tried to do the whole arranged marriage thing a bit differently. Instead of you know going through the trouble of finding someone he announced a competition to select a suitor. The winner would take home Mr. Arnon’s lovely daughter along with $428,000 in cash, 10 vehicles, a house and his durian empire.
Did I mention that Mr. Arnon runs two durian markets in Chumphon province and is very rich? Quite an offer for an arranged marriage if I must say so.
The chaos that ensued.
Well, to nobody’s surprise, this arranged marriage shenanigan quickly went viral. Some Thai publications even picked up the announcement and made it available to the world after the post was deleted on 5th of March. In the end, the response amounted to a total of 10,000 candidates.
The most popular candidate was Mr Premyosapon. His Facebook comment garnered 14,000 likes in a matter of days. In his comment he shared that he was 28 years old and his family owned 300 durian trees. He also promised to do every task that was assigned to him without ever lazing off. Seems like a fine candidate for an arranged marriage.
Guess what? Mr. Arnon declined his offer by saying that he was too handsome and would break his daughter’s heart. Truly a response that deserves a salute. I mean I won’t judge Mr. Arnon if he wanted a chimp for the arranged marriage. You do you Mr. Arnon. You do you.
The hilarious aftermath.
Surprise, surprise! Mr. Arnon cancelled the arranged marriage competition on 10th March. Why did he do that? Apparently, all the attention had a negative impact on his family and business. His daughter also shared that the competition stopped being amusing shortly afterwards. Hmm… I wonder why that happened.
Don’t be discouraged though. Mr. Arnon has said that whoever woos his daughter in the future will get all the benefits of the arranged marriage competition. Though, Mr. Arnon should probably worry about wooing the authorities. Word on the street is that if this whole thing was a publicity stunt then he could be in legal trouble.
