Throughout the decades, we have often witnessed fictional things taking on a life of their own in reality. Usually, they are limited due to their origins. But, at times they surpass every barrier and become a worldwide phenomenon. So much so that people can get quite riled up and emotional about them. Now, of course, you won’t see everyone around you crazy about it. However, those who are crazy about it have enough numbers to keep it alive through numerous ordeals. So, why am I talking about all of this? Well, that’s because I recently came across the most expensive Yugioh card and I must say that I was quite surprised.
Now, I won’t fault you if you have not heard about it. After all, it comes from a small country known as Japan. Maybe, you have heard about the country. So, Yugioh Started its life as a fictional game inside a Japanese manga. The manga itself is quite loved and culturally important. But, many might not have cared if not for the game that took on a life of its own.
Yugioh spawned a trading card game that has sold over 22 billion cards as of now. It also gave birth to the most expensive Yugioh card that is worth quite a bit. Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the manga would have never imagined that one day it will become so humongous.
What is Yugioh?
However, before I proceed, I would like to provide some context regarding the game itself. In the manga, the titular character Yugi Matou unlocks an alter-ego version of himself. To do that, he had to solve an ancient puzzle. That kick-starts the whole thing. As the story progresses, we see various Duel Masters battle it out using cards. The most expensive Yugioh card is one of the aces utilized by Yugi Matou. The battles utilize fantasy monsters and are a very important narrative element of the story.
Then, the manga gained traction, and an anime adaptation was made. After that, the sky was the limit. The series evolved into a franchise with spin-offs, more anime, video games and last but not the least by a long shot, the card game itself. The card game is now big enough to rival the likes of Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering. This means that there are a ton of cards to collect. Though, they won’t ever attain the value of the most expensive Yugioh card. That is because, again, the game has grown so much now that there are thousands of copies of each card circulating around.
What is valuable then?
But, like all things in life, if you had dedicated yourself to the game back in the day and attended every tournament. You may have struck gold somewhere along the way! So, how do you know for sure that what you have is indeed valuable? Heck, you may even have the most expensive Yugioh card but would be none the wiser. The first thing you can do is start by looking out for these things. For example, if the card is part of the first printing of the card or if the card was a part of a limited run, you can bet that it is valuable.
Now, you may be wondering, how will you obtain all that information. Perhaps, you will need to do rigorous research. Or, you can simply reference the neat little list that we have compiled to check if you have got any of the really valuable ones. So, without further ado, let’s start the ascent to the most expensive Yugioh card!
The origin of this card can be traced back to the 2006 Shonen Jump Championship. This card is quite rare and affordable. Affordable? Weren’t we talking about the most expensive Yugioh card here? Well, this one is relatively affordable compared to other cards on this list. However, to ensure that you have something valuable, you must look for the promo version of this Doomcaliber Knight Card. After all, this card has been re-published quite a lot of times.
Why that particular card? Well, that is because it was awarded to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd winners, along with the side event winners during the championship. To make sure that what you have is valuable, look out for the card containing the code GLD4-EN023. Remember this code as it is your way to a nice profit!
What about the cost though? The promo version runs for north of $1500 USD these days. But hey, at least you do not have to fork out millions of dollar for a single card… Yet! Like in the case of the most expensive Yugioh card.
Chinese Dark Magician
This card is one of the special ones for which we have to turn to another language. While numerous Dark Magicians exist out there, the Chinese Dark Magician is in a league of its own. This card is also ultra rare and a must have for collectors worth their salt. After all, not everyone can get the most expensive Yugioh card. Chinese Dark Magician’s specialty comes from the fact that only 100 copies of this card were produced back in the day. The card came bundled with the Weekly Shonen Jump Magazine as a collectible. This was done to celebrate this well-known character and is now sought after by many.
Now, we all know that China is a very vast country. Therefore, you must understand that getting one card out of the 100 that were produced is like finding a needle in a haystack the size of an ocean. Therefore, the asking price of $1,000 USD for one of these is not at all a ludicrous proposition.
Dark Magician Girl
Now, we all know that both the genders have equal status. Therefore, it should be no surprise that for every valuable Chinese Dark Magician, there is also a Dark Magician Girl out there. She is one of the most beloved monsters in the Yugioh fandom. I will leave the reasons for her popularity up to you to research. The original print of this card was a Japan exclusive.
To obtain this card, one had to participate either in competitions or a lottery. Two variants of this card were available. Rare and Secret Rare. The rare version can be found for around a $1,000 USD. However, the secret rare version is a different beast altogether! There were only 100 copies of that card offered via a lottery. That, in addition to her beloved status, will cost you around half a million dollars in USD. It almost reaches the realm of the most expensive Yugioh card. However, in comparison to that, this must-have is an awesome deal.
Tyler, The Great Warrior
Now, we proceed to the territory of the one of a kind cards!
This card was inspired by a human living in the real world. Tyler Gressle was diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer in October of 2002. The condition was called undifferentiated embryonal sarcoma. Because of this condition, the 14-year-old Tyler had no choice other than to become a warrior. He fought through extreme pain for his very life every day. Ultimately, he had to give up some parts of his liver, large intestine, and gallbladder to surgery.
Despite all that though, the doctors were still not optimistic about Tyler’s survival. The Make-a-Wish foundation, through their powers of omniscience, got to know about the kid and his family. Moved by the battle that the kid went through every day, the foundation decided to do something special for him. They learned that Tyler was an avid Yugioh fan. Therefore, they gave him the chance to design his own card. Little did they know that this card would one day rival the might of the most expensive Yugioh card.
Tyler drew the card depicting a warrior deflecting an evil monster’s weapons. 4Kids Entertainment Inc. ensured that the card was finalized and produced in honor of Tyler.
In the end, Tyler went through a long and arduous battle and finally managed to defeat cancer. He is healthy now. Tyler’s mom explained, “We want other families to know that they can have hope, and wishes do come true.”
This card is one of a kind and therefore no monetary value can be attached to it. However, among the bids that Tyler did receive for the card, the highest one was for around $75,000 USD. Again, it almost made it to the realm of the most expensive Yugioh card. But, Tyler, of course, didn’t part with the card. However, if he does ever part with it, you should have enough money ready to snap it then and there.
Tournament Black Luster Soldier
Now, many fans like to argue over the value of this card and Tyler, The Great Warrior. The reason is quite simple. Just like Tyler’s card, this card too is the only one that exists in this world. Now, we all know the ramifications of the last sentence. After all, being one of a kind means that obtaining it is often the ultimate aim of every collector. Therefore, it shouldn’t surprise you to know that this is the defacto most expensive Yugioh card in the world.
This card was awarded during the 1999 Yugioh Championship in Japan. Unlike other plebeian cards made out of inferior materials, this one was printed on stainless steel. This was also the first and last instance of such a thing happening. Therefore, you should not be surprised to hear that the owner of this card is able to demand $10- $12 million USD for this card. Just let that number sink in for a bit there. Worthy of being the most expensive Yugioh card, ain’t it!
One can easily buy a bunch of supercars for that kind of money! However, there is a rumor that the last time it changed hands, it did so for a whopping $2 million USD.
Speechless? Don’t worry, I am speechless too. Hence why I have started hitting every garage sale that I can find. Who knows when my luck will shine upon me am I right???
