Mercedes just launched the Mercedes-Maybach G650 Landaulet. This new ride is the roided up brethren of the G-Wagen. Only 99 of these will ever be built and they were all snagged away shortly after the launch. Asia and Middle East were the largest hoarders but fortunately our Guy Drake also managed to get his hands on one of the puppies. In the pursuit to solidify that this is indeed a Drake car he has sent it over to Brabus for unspecified mods.
But…hold on! What is THIS thing?
By what my mortal eyes can comprehend, the only thing visible to me is a luxe monstrosity about to be branded the “Drake Car”. Why? Just Why? Was a question very prevalent on my mind.
Well, Top Gear thought so too and asked Pamela Amann (G650’s Development Boss) the same thing. Well, to quote the good folks at Top Gear this was basically her answer. “Her answer amounts to “Why not?” “This is an attitude we at TG can get behind and, in short, is why we love this thing.”
But I wasn’t satisfied. So, I fired up my internet and started searching the digital annals to deduce just what inspired this “Drake Car”. I was not disappointed.
The Maybach is an ancient company that started off by making engines. Then, they started making engines for rails and Zeppelins. After that, their engines powered the aircrafts of World War 1. Their graduation to making every generation of the Panzer Tank for Nazi Germany was quite amusing as well. But this was not all, they started making vehicle engines and now one of them ended up in the “Drake Car”.
The last bit wasn’t entirely true. After their acquisition by Daimler-Chrysler they were made to manufacture luxury cars but they failed. Spectacularly at that!
They were competing with British Manufacturers and simply didn’t have enough pedigree. They were only known extensively in Germany and people outside did not care. Therefore, in 2013 they met an end. Now, I listen you asking what the hell this is then. Calm down! Let me explain to you how this “Drake Car” came to be.
The plot thickens…
Actually, in 2015, they decided to revive the brand in a spectacular fashion. They announced that “Mercedes-Maybach” would manufacture luxe versions of the S Class. They made two models. Namely, the S-560 and the S-650. And herein my brethren lies the roots of the luxe “Drake Car”.
Who approved this!?
Since Mercedes is incredibly wealthy, it can do stuff like elongating the wheelbase of an SUV to give it posh seats. Adding a fabric roof to make it convertible. Adding screens between the driver and passengers that can be made opaque at the flick of switch. Providing top of the line infotainment system. All seem like easy tasks for the automobile giant.
Yet, it still retains some interactive features to maintain a bond between the vehicle and the riders.
What about the Drake Car though?
Now, no one one knows what mods the “Drake Car” is going to have and frankly it does not matter. What does matter though is that this gorgeous thing is going to cost in six figures and you can find it in your nearest Drake Instagram soon.
