Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz would be totally envious of these shiny shoes. The ‘Angel Wing Stilettos’ are made of 2000 diamonds, and 18-carat white and yellow gold. British Designer Christopher Shellis crafted these heels, and they’re definitely one of his most expensive creations
Shellis had previously made stilettos for Beyoncé, which cost £200,000. But these shoes have topped his previous record. “‘I believe they are my finest creation so far. Like any true classical treasure, they have the ability to last for eternity. The craftsmanship needed to create them is the same needed to make a royal crown. They are a work of art but designing them nearly drove me mad. I can honestly imagine Queen Nefertiti of ancient Egypt wearing them in her palace, or discovered wearing a pair in her sarcophagus. They look very, very regal – every part is special,” he said.
Shellis says his creation is nothing short of creating a bridge, because they’re all about the engineering and load-bearing. He must have created about 150 drawings, before he finalised the design. The shoes, with a golden fleur-de-lys cost way more than an actual Rolls Royce. So even though Nefertiti isn’t around anymore, it might take an actual queen to spend so much on these shoes.
The Angel Wing Stilettos feature an angel, which Shellis says is the symbol of liberation and women’s empowerment. They are hand-crafted, and can be custom-made for any foot size. His shop, House of Borgezie, is based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
