Darrel Lea, Australia’s favorite confectionery, has now launched a stout. A special one at that! This new stout combines the goodness of dark chocolate and licorice in a drink that will surprise you. But, you must be wondering, why did Darrel Lea decide to make a beer suddenly?
The folks at the Darrel Lea company thought that the best way to increase sales is to combine licorice with beer. According to the company, they did this because Australian dads love their licorice products. So, with Father’s Day around the corner, they thought that the best way to celebrate would be to combine it with beer. After all, beer is every dad’s other most favorite thing.
The company did admit that this idea was controversial. But, they say that they are confident that this product is going to be a winner. To which I have to agree is the beer is now almost sold out. Now, you must be wondering which division of the company was tasked to make this wonderful thing. Well, the folks at Darrel Lea did not make it in-house. Instead, they outsourced this project to a famous local brewery.
Nomad Brewing Co is a local brewery from Brookvale famous for its wacky creations like the Budgy Smuggler Pale Ale, and I Remember My First Check-In. They also have excellent beers like the Cookies and Cream Double Milk Stout and the Choc Orange Double Milk Stout.
They were the best choice for brewing a stout that fuses dark chocolate and licorice with creations like these. For ten weeks, they had to face many challenges to create this perfect harmony between these two polarising ingredients.
The silver lining in all of this was the fact that the brewery’s leading brewer hated licorice. So, they had a perfect test subject ready to give his critique. They tried several different variations, but none got the sign of approval from him. Finally, they managed to concoct a version that combined a ton of chocolate malts and chocolate-coated licorice. This mixture resulted in a chocolate stout that had the perfect amount of licorice to make it exciting.
The people from Darrel Lea described this beer as a dark chocolate stout that is beautifully bitter and rich, and creamy. The co-owner of Nomad Brewing Co was also ecstatic about this creation as she had loved Darrel Lea’s chocolate coated licorice growing up, and this collab was a dream which had come true for her.
Darrel Lea had launched these with a price tag of AU$11 per can or $45 per pack if you purchased it from Nomad’s website. That would no longer be possible, though, as it is all sold out as of writing this article. Though, you can follow Nomad’s social accounts to know about the physical locations where you will be able to snag them during the limited run. Hurry, or you’ll miss out!
