Since the 1680s, Stradivarius violins have been the metric used to judge other violins’ quality. The most revered of them all, these violins have some of the richest histories among all the other instruments. When Antonio Stradivari, the genius creator of this lineage of violins, started selling these, competitors all around the globe lost their minds in trying to uncover his secret. Despite their countless efforts, they could never come close to his genius.
With time, every violinist worth their salt came to revere this legendary instrument. Some became family heirlooms, and others became prized possessions of collectors. Few got stolen because of their value, and now only 650 of them survive.
Therefore, it was only a matter of time before their value skyrocketed to millions of dollars. One even sold for a steep price of $15 million! So, what better way to make a legendary album than use the most legendary violins ever to make it? And, he did precisely that.
Mr. Steven Smith of J&A Beare, the mastermind behind this endeavor, brought in violins worth an eye-watering £146 million for this project. He had to source them from all over the world. Many of which were loaned from private collectors with meticulous agreements and expensive insurance. Each violin flew in first-class under constant surveillance.
This expenditure almost went to waste when the leading violinist Janine Jansen was diagnosed with Covid. The project had to be delayed for three weeks, after which she managed to return. However, all was not well as she had become relatively weak due to the illness and struggled to climb the concert hall stairs. But, she persevered nonetheless, and the recording was finally successful.
Now, you must be thinking, “Gee, it sounds so cool! Where can I get this album?” To which my reply would be that you cannot get it yet. It will be released on 10th September on Decca Classics alongside an accompanying film that will hit the cinemas on 2nd September.
Make sure to watch it!
