Since her inception in 1974, Hello Kitty has given rise to a plethora of products and has become an iconic cultural icon. Her full name is Kitty White and she is a fictional cartoon character. Sanrio created her alongside Yuko Shimizu. Hello Kitty is a female anthropomorphization of a human and Japanese Bobtail. She rocks a red bow and unfortunately has no mouth.
Her backstory is quite interesting as well. According to the creators, she is a perpetual 3rd-grade student who lives outside London. In 2018, Sanrio announced that Hello Kitty’s birthday is on the 1st of November.
Hello Kitty has an extensive media franchise which includes a product line, clothing apparel, toy-line, manga, anime, popular music, and other media. The character is also a staple of the Kawaii segment of Japanese popular culture. Sanrio had groomed Hello Kitty into an IP worth $6 billion a year just by 2010. By 2014, it was raking in $8 billion a year and as of 2019, it has generated $80 billion in lifetime retail sales.
Who is it for?
Hello Kitty was originally meant for pre-adolescent females. Numerous Hello Kitty TV series, manga, and anime have been produced aimed towards children. However, the brand soon expanded to include adult consumers as well. That is how we came to see Hello Kitty on everything from school supplies, lunchboxes to fashion accessories.
Sanrio has also created three theme parks based on Hello Kitty. They are Harmonyland in Hiji, Oita, Japan; Sanrio Puroland in Tama New Town, Tokyo, Japan; and Sanrio Hello Kitty Town in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, Malaysia.
So, why am I talking about all of this?
Well, that is because last year, Furla and Sanrio got together and launched a Hello Kitty themed collection. But this year, the companies are teaming up to unveil a whole new line of products. Wallets, mini-bags, credit card holders, coin purses, etc. are all part of the new lineup. However, the flagship products are a handbag and accessories capsule that has been inspired by outer space.
Apart from that, there are also other standout products. The first one is a red shoulder bag constructed with a gold chain and a matching wallet. The other one is a mini carry-all created to look like Hello Kitty and My Melody’s iconic faces. On top of it, both the designs have a cute bow! Heck, there are even different wallet variations which also includes envelope wallets!
The pricing starts at $88 USD and you can visit Furla’s web store for further info.
