It’s the year of the rat according to the Chinese Zodiac calendar, and we’ve already been seeing some stunning merchandise to commemorate this. We’ve even seen a few watches, but this one by Harry Winston takes the cake.
This watch is a stunning red, set in a mother of pearls background. The case is 36.2mm and made of 18k rose gold. What really brings out the beauty of the watch is the silhouette of a rat, which is made keeping in mind the paper cutting tradition of China. This rat design is embedded with 20 brilliant-cut diamonds, 14 marquise-cut diamonds, 1 emerald-cut diamond.
The single emerald diamond at the 12 ‘o’ clock position is a signature design of Harry Winston. To create the dial, the paper has been replaced with a rat made of thin gold. The paper cutting technique is referred to as jianzhi, and was developed in the Tang Dynasty. The sheets of paper are folded and then cut, with the result, when the paper is opened, being a string of paper figures with lots of negative space, or air, between them. The watch has a red alligator strap, which is only unavailable in the state of California.
The auspicious red and the intricately carved rat make the watch a special addition to anyone’s collection. Only 8 pieces are going to be made, and to buy one, you would have to send in an enquiry at Harry Winston’s website. We may consider rats to be a nuisance, but the Chinese consider them highly ingenious and resourceful.
