The Tour-de-force painting from Filipino contemporary artist Ronald Ventura managed to break the record for the highest bid for Sotheby’s Contemporary Southeast Asian Painting auction. With this sale , the acceptance of Philippine contemporary art has become mainstream.
The painting has often been in the news due to the violent content on it. Often compared to with graffiti and hyper-realism the painter has used monochromatic gray almost exclusively but for the blood on the lances of soldiers. The brutality of war is underscored and easily captivates the audience.
The final price of $1.1 million was astonishing, even according to Sotheby’s. It was arrived at after furious bidding – almost 50 bids leading to a price that is 24 times over what was originally estimated.
