India has a long, rich history with gems, beginning with the disclosure of jewels in the fourth century BC. The gems of India are a striking articulation of the nation’s stylish and social history.
Only few gems have been recovered from various periods of the nation. Although, many references in writing and annals give a proof of Indian customs.

And Hyderabad Nizams were one of the most precious gems at the time of eighteenth century. And you know what!
These exquisite Nizam jewels are out on display. And on the top of that, this exhibition includes the ‘Jacob’ diamond, one of the biggest diamonds in the world.
So, What’s so big about this ‘Jacob Diamond’?
Jacob Diamond is seventh largest diamond in the world. This precious stone weighs 184.75 carats, which is an impressive weight of any gemstone. Its splendid cutting, lucidity and shine makes this sparkling diamond look adorable.

The Imperial (Jacob) Diamond
It is currently displayed at National Museum.
The diamond was christened the ‘jacob’ after Alexander Malcolm Jacob, who sold the stone to Nizam.

And the best part is, it is even two times bigger than Kohinoor Diamond. Imagine!
So, Let’s know about Nizam Jewels Exhibition?
In 1995, the Government of India acquired one of the biggest gems, Nizam Jewels. Firstly, the jewels were bought at the price of Rs. 218 Crore.
After a drawn out fight in court, Reserve Bank of India, Mumbai took the custody of these jewels. Nizam Jewels stayed there till 29th June 2001.
After that they were shifted to RBI, New Delhi for well-being. Lastly, they are in custody of the National Museum, New Delhi, However, the National Museum conducts exhibition for a befitting showcase. The exhibition takes you through the journey of these precious jewels.
Nizam Jewels are on the display for the third time. Preceding this, the National Museum displayed the Nizam’s Jewels in the year 2001 and 2007.

Apart from the Jacob Diamond being the highlight of the exhibition.
There are precious necklaces, belts and clasps, sets of wrist trinkets and bangles, armlets, toe rings, finger rings.

There are precious stones from the mines of Golconda and Colombian. The rubies from Burmese and spinets and Basra’s pearls, are also the part of the Exhibition

The exhibition is taking place at the National Museum, New Delhi. It is open from 19th Feb 2019 to 5th May 2019. The timing is from 10.00 AM to 6.00 PM. The entry fees is only Rs.50/- per person.
