New Orleans’ famed Café du Monde has entered a new bakery-inspired collaboration with running shoe manufacturer Saucony and French Quarter design boutique Sneaker Politics.
Sneaker Politics, a French Quarter sneaker boutique, partnered with Café du Monde and retro running shoe brand Saucony to develop a new pair of sneakers inspired by the famous beignet stand. The shoes go on sale starting Saturday, according to a news release.

Dubbed the Shadow 5000, the tan and green sneakers are inspired by the colours of the Café du Monde logo and its popular beignets favoured by Blain McGowin, a Baton Rouge-based designer.
Blaine McGowan, a product designer at Sneaker Politics, a state-wide brand with stores in Lafayette and Baton Rouge as well, said the collaboration was a mix of luck and hard work. McGowan, a 26-year-old Baton Rouge native, moved to New Orleans in 2017 and was obsessed with Café du Monde, “eating there, like, 50 times a week,” he joked.
The Politics x Saucony x Cafe Du Monde Shadow 5000 priced at $120 goes on sale on Saturday, June 22. Coming in men’s sizes 4-14, the sneaker features a combo of brown and tan upper panels (resembling fried dough) and a green outsole (representing Café du Monde’s iconic green and white awnings).
It also features green and white striping on the insole, and the official Café du Monde logo on the tongue.
The sneakers come in a box that looks like Café du Monde’s take-home beignet mix. The set is being paired with a beignet mix and cans of Café du Monde-branded ground coffee and chicory. There will only be a few hundred pairs available to the public nationwide.
McGowan said Sneaker Politics will be getting roughly 400 pairs, including 200 that will be set aside for a family and friends release. A few hundred more will go out to stores nationwide, though quantities will be limited, he said. “It’ll be super rare,” he said.
The Shadow 5000 is the latest addition to a growing line of global releases inspired by niche consumer brands.
