We were recently amazed when a copy of Super Mario 64 fetched a staggering $1.6 million back in July. Now, another copy of one of the games from this legendary franchise has been sold for $2 million. And it is making everyone lose their minds.
$2 million what!?
Yes, you read that right! A copy of Super Mario Bros initially made for the NES has now smashed the previous record and claimed the crown for the most expensive game.
An anonymous buyer purchased this sealed copy of the most sold game on the NES via the collectibles websites Rally. This copy was rated 9.8 on the fabled Wata scale for its pristine condition.
Rally is an auction website with a new approach to the whole collectibles market. They allow people to invest in these collectible assets by turning them into equity shares. The users then have the opportunity to invest in custom diversified portfolios and can hold stakes in multiple assets and asset classes.
They do this by acquiring rare collectible assets, which they are sure will appreciate over time. Then, they share the critical info regarding the assets and allow the people to buy shares for that particular asset. Finally, when anyone expresses their interest in buying that asset outright, the investors can vote on whether to sell and cash out their investment or not.
What is happening to this world?
Don’t panic! Nothing has gone wrong. While you may think that this price is ludicrous, such prices are nothing new in the collectible market. Going by the adage that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, the art and collectibles market has been booming in recent years. In fact, over the past 18 months, video game price records have been smashed consistently, with a copy of Super Mario Bros. starting this trend in July 2020 when it was sold for $114,000.
Some people have expressed concerns about the involvement of money laundering in these cases. But, I would like to believe that these are just the highly successful fans of the games buying a fragment of their childhood memories at sky-high prices.
Love Mario? Then, you’ll definitely like reading about this diamond Mario pendant!
